It’s a fact that our lovely pets which we share our homes with can attract parasites!
It’s not a pleasant thought but the good news is that we can prevent these little beasties on our dogs and cats and stop them spreading to us. There are lots of different products available and there is a big difference in how effective the products are.
The old fashioned flea shampoos and sprays are still available in some pet shops but they really don’t work very well at all so we would recommend that you do not use them.
You may be familiar with the ‘spot-on’ method of applying parasitacides but again beware that the ‘spot-ons’ which you can buy over the counter in pet shops are not very effective and can actually cause skin irritation and toxicity in some cases.
There are a number of different veterinary authorised products which offer protection for your dog or cat from fleas, ticks, mites and worms including lungworm. Some of these are applied to the skin and some are given as tablets or tasty treats. We can work out a regime that suits you and your pet after talking to you about their daily lifestyle, where they walk and which parasites we are most concerned about.
You should take a look at our Ashley Vets Healthy Paws Plan which is a great way to cover the cost of your regular preventative health care including vaccinations and flea and worm control.
Please call us or make a free appointment to come in and talk to our veterinary nurse about the best parasite plan for your pet and make sure we are all free of ‘little passengers’!!
